The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
