The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
