EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
